Join us on Thursday, October 6th in the Performance Hall of the Ohio Union for our annual fundraiser dinner, Fast-A-Thon. The doors will open at 5:20 pm and the event will start at 6:00 pm. Dinner will be catered by Lavash. The Muslim prayer, Maghreb, will be observed at 7:10.
This year, our focus for Fast-A-Thon is mental health awareness in multicultural communities as well as in religious communities. Firstly, we want to dispel myths about mental health in multicultural communities, which are less prone to seeking treatment. We want to encourage multicultural communities to be aware and vigilant of the various mental states of people in their communities. Secondly, we want explore the rich religious traditions of Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Hinduism and Judaism as well as their celebration of mental wellness. We also welcome perspectives on the issue that don’t necessarily fall under a religious perspective. For example, we are hosting a speaker from the Neuroscience Department and a speaker from the Counseling and Consultation Service to present mental health through a different perspective. All of the proceeds will be given to the Health and Wellness branch of Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS) in order to benefit newly arrived refugees and immigrants. No doubt that there is a lot of stress, depression, and anxiety in leaving one’s home unwillingly. The Health and Wellness Branch of CRIS is dedicated to long-term stability of newly arrived refugees and immigrants in the Columbus area, hosting coping sessions, yoga sessions, and local outings to parks.
